WHY SHOULD WE CARE?

Every single indigenous culture on our planet matters. They each add an ineffable amount of diversity and perspective to our world. From every indigenous culture we can learn things a wide spectrum of things. Indigenous cultures globally highlight the value of nature and what it should mean to our society. Their extreme lifestyles also shed light upon the fact that humans can be happy without our convenient innovations as they all the way up in the mountains of Tibet to down low in the humid terrain of the Amazon rainforest. When these cultures are ignored by people, organizations, and governments, we essentially toss away human history and our roots over relatively trivial matters like money and modernization. It is important that awareness for these cultures needs to step up or else nearly all of these cultures will fade away by turn of the 22nd century, including the Nukak. The loss of the Nukak would be a painful loss among many others. We would lose the last nomadic indigenous culture on earth, that were ever so resourceful with nature and committed to it. We would lose the true natives of Colombia, simply seeking to live thier lifestyles. Today, the Nukak population stands at 600 people and has been on a decline for the past three decades, but we can still help these people through their plight and we may never have to see the day these Amazon dwellers leave the world behind. It all starts with you! One person can influence another who can influence another and eventually the world may reach a consensus to help not only the Nukak, but all indigenous people around the world

TAKE ACTION

Many would think that the situation the Nukak face is unable to be helped since the landmines obstructing their return are deep into the mountainous terrain, so external help to remove these landmines is completely counterintuitive because it puts volunteers in a dangerous situation, so many think that it is solely up to the government to help the Nukak out of their struggles. Even though the government aims to clear all landmines in Colombia by 2021, experts have often expressed that this is highly unlikely because of the tough terrains of certain areas where these landmines have been placed, like the Amazon(Moloney). The Nukak have been living in refuge for over a decade now, and for every year we add to the time the Nukak have to wait to return to the forest, we continue to increase the potential for their mental and physical wellness to decline to levels lower than it has ever been before. In situations like this, where it is tough to take direct action, often times advocacy is enough to emphasize the importance of a problem and the desperate need for it to be solved. By putting pressure on Colombia and the government in general, we can possibly speed up the situation. In advocacy, every voice affects persuasion, so  give your voice and some of your time to help the government understand the importance of the Nukak’s plight.

Spread Advocacy Through Your Community

Another way to provide general advocacy for the Nukak is to spread your ideas via social media like Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. Expressing your ideas on social media can be a great way to less formally indicate the need for advocacy and help. Every informal line, comment, or like could help the Nukak through their tough times.
